Make a Storytelling HGTV Video During COVID
Truth be told, I love HGTV. It’s mindless in a way that I can justify.
I learn about other countries through “House Hunters International.” I pick up on the nuances of human relationships through “Love It or List It.” I explore the intricacies of real estate through “Flip or Flop.” And I swoon at the delightful banter when an “open concept” living space magically appears during “Property Brothers.”
I have zero DIY capabilities (except, maybe, for switching a light bulb). But through the beauty of HGTV, I can pretend that I can do anything.
Speaking of projects, during the shutdown lots of projects – small and large – have been done at our church. One of them was an addition of a new ADA-compliant and gender-neutral bathroom. We wanted to let people know about it, but struggled with how best to do it. We tried taking a photo of the bathroom, but do you know how depressing and unimpressive it is to see a still photo of a bathroom? B.O.R.I.N.G.
So, what’s an HGTV wannabe-host to do? Why, of course! Make a movie! Now that I have an upgraded iPhone (XR) the movie world is my oyster. Watch out Scorsese, move over Meryl, Cesie’s on the move.
Working with our church staff, socially distanced, I channeled Joanna and Chip Gaines during one of their big reveals. And thus, you have the following and oh-so-dramatic, “Tour of a New Bathroom.”
Here are some key takeaways:
- Keep your congregation or organization informed as to what you’re doing during COVID. No matter how big or small. It’s key to keeping people engaged. Overcommunicating is better than not communicating enough.
- Your communication doesn’t have to be boring. Have fun.
- Keep it simple. High production value is nice, but it’s not necessary.
- Celebrate “wins” during COVID. Lord knows, we all need to applaud now and again.
- Don’t forget to say “thank you.” The money to build a new bathroom didn’t come out of thin air. In this case, legacy gifts made this project possible.
This video was uploaded to our church’s YouTube page. It then found its way into our e-newsletter. It has over 100 views so far (I think I account for about 25% of those views). And guess how long it took for us to make the video? 20 minutes. Our next project: celebrating the upgrade and repair of our organ.
We’ve all been through a lot. Get inspired. Watch a little HGTV. Then celebrate and have fun. Make a movie that tells a story, acknowledges generosity, and moves people to smile. You’ll be glad you did.
